The 2023 Old Spanish Days Fiesta
The non-profit organization Old Spanish Days has been presenting its five-day-long Fiesta for nearly a century, and it remains a fundamental part of the fabric of San Diego’s annual calendar. Celebrating as it does the region’s wonderfully multicultural heritage—from American Indian and Spanish to Mexican and Euro-American histories and traditions—it’s a stirring reminder of just how special and deep-rooted this section of the California Central Coast really is.
This year’s Old Spanish Days Fiesta goes down from August 2nd to August 6th, which—we probably don’t have to tell you—is coming up remarkably fast. So you definitely want to lock down your Mar Monte Hotel guest room or suite for the festivities ASAP.
The Old Spanish Days Fiesta comes chockablock with fabulous food, live entertainment, marketplaces, and all-around fun (with an educational bent). Highlights include various arts-and-crafts showcases, not least the El Mercado De La Guerra across from City Hall and the Fiesta Arts & Crafts Show on Cabrillo Blvd.; tours of such historic landmarks as the Santa Barbara Courthouse; stirring performances of Mexican folklórico dancing; and the Fiesta Rodeo.
Then there are the Cabrillo Blvd. parades! The Fiesta Historical Parade (El Desfile Histórico) takes place on Friday, August 4th and the Children’s Parade (El Desfile de los Niños) on Saturday, August 5th. The 2023 Fiesta Parade Grand Marshal is Ernestine De Soto, a Chumash elder.
